The History
TOKYO
Tokyo Metropolis is the capital and most populated district of Japan. Located at the head of Tokyo Bay, this district forms part of the Kanto Region on the central Pacific Coast of Japan’s main island of Honshu. Tokyo is the economic and political center of the country, as well as The National Government and the seat of the Emperor of Japan.
In 2019, this district had a population of 13,929,280.The Greater Tokyo Area is the most populous metropolitan area in the world, with 37.393 million residents as of 2020.
Travel Tips
- Airports – Look for flights into Haneda Airport (HND), it is the closest airport to Shibuya, and in the long run will save you time, money, and energy. Narita (NRT) is another option for flying into however, you will need to add about an hour to your itinerary if you use the local train.
- Airport Transfer/Transportation – Use the local train system for Airport Transfers or Transportation from Haneda (HND). Make sure to note their trains only operate from 6:00AM to 12:00AM. If you arrive earlier or later than these times or are traveling in a group, you might be better off booking Private Transfer or Transportation. If you are arriving to Narita (NRT) you have the option of the Narita Express or the NEW Tokyo Keisei Skyliner. (The skyliner takes you into Ueno Station in about 40 minutes and from Ueno, you can transfer to local train lines).
- Local Trains – A SUICA card and JR Pass will be true investments! Pre-purchase your SUICA and JR Pass card online and pick it up upon your arrival. This will save you time, money and inconvenience. If you are planning to visit multiple cities in Japan, there are many railways, JR Trains is one of them, they offer 7, 14 or 21 day passes, but remember, a JR pass is only used to visit multiple cities in Japan. For local travel use public transportation. (You must purchase the JR Pass from outside of Japan. It is solely used for tourism.)
- Communication – Download Google Translate Japanese Pack – From the moment you disembark, you will find this app pack extremely useful. It can help translate Japanese Characters into Englishand can help with both menus and waitstaff that do not speak English.
- Staying Connected – Many travelers suggest purchasing a prepaid SIM card. You can purchase these from the airport, or another option would be B-mobile visitor SIM. Keep in mind that B-mobile requires you order one at least 7 days prior to your arrival in Japan. If you happen to be traveling with a group there is also the option of renting a pocket wi-fi. This can connect to up to 10 devices (only down fall of this is it has to be charged every day and remember to return it at the end of your trip.)

- Roppongi Hills Observation Deck – Head on up to the rooftop and get an amazing view of the city, including views of the iconic red Tokyo tower, for just 1,800 yen ($17.38 USD). If you’re lucky and the day is clear, you caneven see Mount Fuji!
- Robot Restaurant –Experience the multi-colored laser lights, flashy dancers, and extravagant robots putting on a show at one of Tokyo’s famous themed dining spots. The Shinjuku Robot Restaurant in Tokyo provides a wild, energetic experience that you won’t be able to find anywhere else in the world! Despite the title, Robot Restaurant is more of a glittery show than a place to eat. You won’t understand much of what you watch, but one thing is for sure— there will be non-stop energy and laughter.
- Tokyo Disneyland – This is the first Disney park to open outside of the United States – witness Disney’s timeless stories come to life through the many attractions offered. When you visit Tokyo DisneySea, go on an adventure exploring the fantastic myths and legends of the seas. Whichever you choose, you’re sure to have a grand time! Join Mickey Mouse and all the other prominent Disney characters and ride as much as you can. Watch the shows and parades located inside the venues and end your day with a stunning fireworks finale.
